From Plans to Pavement

In a previous article builder, author, and RCC Group member Brian Thompson told the story of his "Mirov 2", a fictitious Russian sportscar created for an 80's television ad by the investment firm Norwich Union. However, this is not his only custom car build. He also created a 3-wheeler based on the Dolphin Vortex.

The Vortex was originally designed in the late 1980's and marketed as a set of plans, by Dolphin Vehicles in Campbell, California (USA). The package specified a monocoque chassis, motorcycle drivetrain, and included comprehensive blueprints and a construction manual.

Here's Brian's commentary on the build:

"I started this Vortex build in 2007 and managed to pass the UK MSVA test to get it registered in 2014. The plywood chassis threw up some problems such as seat belt mounts. I had to design and install a steel frame to spread loads for these. The curved windscreen is from the rear of a UVA M6GTR (Manta Montage)."

"Engine is Triumph Trophy 1200cc four-cylinder motorbike, which was a great fit. Reverse gearbox is an MNR product fitted with sprockets and used transversely. The front wheels are Cragar chromes, rear one is alloy Centerline."

"The body is fiberglass over polyurethane foam, which was rubbed down and hand painted using a roller. Interior is trimmed in orange and grey leather, steering wheel and gear shift hand made. Exhaust used to exit out the rear deck but was far too loud! Rerouted to exit below with an extra silencer each side."

Like the Mirov 2, Brian's Vortex is built with a high degree of quality and finish. Compared to its stock design, his version updates the styling and brings it into the present. Another fantastic job.
