The IAVA Mara story

The 1971 IAVA Mara

The beginning of the 1970s would mark a milestone in the history of sportscars in Argentina, the Argentine Advanced Vehicles Industry (I.A.V.A.), was a company created by the Fiat dealer group in Argentina. Established in the town of Martínez, within the Province of Buenos Aires, It was founded by the engineer Juan Carlos Fisanotti who was the technical manager.

The Mara was the first development of the IAVA Engineering. The idea was presented in August 1971 by engineers Juan Carlos Fisanotti and Mr. Miguel Angel Galuzzi. It was a concept car designed to use the mechanicals of the Fiat 128 1100cc, but the car would be completely different.

The engine and the transmission were mounted mid-rear and the bodywork was done in Fiberglass with an exterior design influenced by the work of Bertone and Italdesign. Stylign cues of the Maserati Boomerang are readily apparent.

The engine of the 128 was enlarged to 1200 cc for this prototype and the goal was a top speed of 130mph, its construction or practical phase began in November 1971.

It was a design study, which they planned to take to several European exhibitions to gauge public reaction to the prototype. IAVA had the ambition to sell it in Argentina as well as export markets.

Alas, it was not to be. A single example of the car was built and developed util the mid 1970's. It appeared publicly in a number of redesigned guises but eventually the company moved on to other ventures, selling a very successful line of tuning accessories for FIAT's in the Argentine market.
